Site is located up hill form the Chalone Creek bridge of the main park road, approx. 150 m from the SW corner of the bridge. Part of the original boundaries. Bridge & housing area nearby (within sight). Bench trail runs at base of slope between hill & Chalone Creek. Stands where pines dominate are very sparse in the Monument. Pine is present in moderate abundance in the Monument, and is consistenty present in almost every other stand, especially oak woodland stands. Whether Pine occurs in a stand by itself is questionable. Plot is a stand of pine surrounded by various wet chaparral species (Quercus douglasii, Ceanothus cuneatus, etc.). Understory consists of Melica imperfecta, Lupinus albifrons, & Eriorgonum nudum, growing on a substrate of unconsolidated igneous gravel. Two dead/down pines account for some of the openess in the tree height layer. Three young pines are present (approx. 1-1.5 m tall). Bees on Monardella. Deer scat.
